Concerts + German people = frustration

// March 27th, 2007 // cultural differences

Its the number one stereotype. When I told people I was moving here, it was the thing that was brought up most. Very rude people the germans. No sense of humour at all. Silly little moustaches. Okay, so i made the last one up but you get the idea. I really couldnt agree less with these stereotypes, on the whole I find german people incredibly honest and kind, even if they are students of the “punch you in the face” direct style of communication, particularly in english.

But there is one situation where they gleefully live up to their reputation – concerts…..

Geeeez guys whats up? If you want to pay 20eur to stand in the dark and chat to your mates, come on over to my place, i’ll put the lights out and we’ll have a hootenanny of a good time. I’ll even stand at the front and pretend to sing if you like? I can’t, but I doubt you’ll notice. I’m suprised they don’t employ those signs they have for tv in-studio audiences so foreign musicians dont get offended at the indifference of the crowd and refuse to play here. They could hold up “applause” or “woop and holla” to give a gentle nudge to anyone still looking in the right direction ;)

You can find more atmosphere at a bus stop than at the most of the gigs i’ve been to here. When I convince ami and the gang to start our long talked about leipzig club night “fuck off and dance” i’ll give the band permission to take the teachers in england approach to anyone abit too chatty:

band: (stopping playing) “excuse me”

bigmouth from crowd: “oh sorry”

band: “is there something you want to share with us all?”

bigmouth: “oh, er no”

band: “no, go on if theres something that so important you feel the need to interrupt us to say, then you should say it to us all, no?”

bigmouth: “…..”

band: “I thought not. Now fuck off and dance”.

    Hmm, can't remember that I chat during concerts. Quiet loud there too. You should go out with dancers! ;)
