[...] Anyway, Adam over at HipHipUK has posted a two part series on communtiy and its application by a few well-known t-shirts sites. I posted a response and Adam was kind enough to post it up on their blog as part 3 of the series, very cool of him. [...]

Competitions good and Threadless have been really quick to counter that new competition. Its good to have new upstarts like Split the Atom and Oddica to keep the pressure on Threadless and the industry as a whole. I also think the slogan based tee's was an inspired move as the Threadless design competition was becoming so big and the standard so high that 99% of the community were never going to win the competition. The slogan contest is a way for anyone to enter a submission and levelled the playing field for non-artists in the Threadless VC. I also think there is a Threadless backlash on the way, I've been meaning to write a post on that.

I have an interest in these Tshirt happenings becuase I definitely want to open up my own shopp someday. I think it really sucks that tons of companies are copying Threadless including the wankers at Split The Atom. But I noticed this Oddica uprising and Threadless quickily countered with its own version of artist tees, which they are calling Threadless Select and printing on the American Apparel. I really hope Threadless takes down all comers for they are clearly the best company in all the ways you mentioned. They have a community. But I do like these other independents like Tank Theory, Oddica, and Beautiful Decay, because all these three seem to be concerned witht the artists. Lots of choices where to spend the almighty dollar.

Yeah I agree Miles, Threadless/SkinnyCorp are no longer a t-shirt company but one large virtual community split into different interest areas. Also shows how much easier it is to diversify and try new things like 15megs or Extra Tasty when you have one cash cow like Threadless.

I think its also interesting to note that Skinny Corp has also been able to leverage their core community to expand outside of the t-shirt realm - Extra Tasty & 15 Megs of Fame have some definate 'threadless like' features that work for those ideas as well.
