Hi Fletch,

Very interesting blog. Yeah, you have a point on the community front. I guess it's a challenge for Spreadshirt, Cafepress and the rest to give their partners more and more features that allow them generate a real community on their sites.

How would you see a small site like mine generate this type of community feel? By allowing visitors rate, suggest products. Add commmenting etc?

Hi Tim,

Firstly thanks for taking the time to comment its great to get some discussion going and the differing viewpoints make interesting reading. I was never trying to say that there is no place for Spreadshirt, they are fantastic at what they do, look how quickly they dislodged the dinosaur that is Cafepress. My point was more that the marketplace is incredibly crowded partly to do with the fact that Spreadshirt has made it easy to run a web store. In this new enviroment I was trying to promote the idea that good products might not be enough, that companies should be thinking about real stickyness achieved I believe through interactivity and community, This sort of loyalty I don;t believe branding alone can offer. I'm now setting up some interviews with Spreadshirt and I can't to get their take on the industry.

Hi Miles,
Yes, sorry I was addressing Adam. I agree with your points. I run a Spreadshirt store and - you're right - as far as I'm concerned I don't want Spreadshirt to be the brand my customer sees - I want my brand on there. And to be fair to Spreadshirt, I can achieve that pretty well with their Premium service. I can see what Adam means if he's talking about other Design Your Own sites - maybe tshirtstudio or something - where the brand maybe isn't as strong and there's no community element. However, even this has it's place - just a slightly different service.

Tim - not sure if you are addressing me or Adam but I agree with you. The big peer-production companies are setup to power smaller brands. I think that was my point on community - they are there to support those smaller brand/shop owners vs a direct conversation with the people buying the shirts.

I think that would actually be a bad thing - if you are the smaller brand/co and the backend company you are using tries to establish a direct relationship with your customer.

Haven't you missed the point slightly about Spreadshirt and co. Surely, this model allows little guys to create thousands of smaller versions of threadless - each giving their own customers the same kind of brand identity you talk about.

[...] Anyway, Adam over at HipHipUK has posted a two part series on communtiy and its application by a few well-known t-shirts sites. I posted a response and Adam was kind enough to post it up on their blog as part 3 of the series, very cool of him. [...]
