I guess most of you wont have had the experience of having to pull off your entire dead big toenail. I’ve had it twice, in three years. I’d like to share it with you, here is the big toe minus nail:

Keeping it in the family

// September 22nd, 2007 // Comments // oddities

After my other family post became easily the most popular ever zig post, I thought it was only fair to show other branch on my family tree, mumsy. I think its pretty clear who’s genes won the battle of me. I don’t have any photos of my parents but here is a postcard they gave me from their recent trip to Gdansk, Poland:

A seafaring legend, which is the highest form of legend.  No-one can be unhappy in a sailors cap.

Finding the sweet spot

// April 1st, 2007 // Comments // oddities

Spring is here. Yay. Insert opening joke here. Yay. Move to next paragraph. Yay.

To tell you the truth, its been here for a while now. I think the last time it snowed was two weeks ago, but its been such a mild winter, relaxing days in the park and sun have becoming worrying common for March. I also know its spring because “club style shania twain bridge” singer has come out of hibernation. Looking slimmer from a gruelling winter of rehearsal, preparation and crafting of his art.

I first wrote about him when I arrived here last summer in this post. He’s always been somewhat of a hero of mine ever since I arrived. Its difficult to describe his unique genre of music, i’d probably go for “musical massacre”, his limited repertoire of about 10 songs, his mole like appearance, to says he’s has the full package would be a criminal understatement. I can talk about his heart-wrenching renditions of “your song”, but I wouldn’t be able to find the words to do his act justice. So what i’ll do is talk about what he has come to represent for me.

Buying phone credit

// November 26th, 2006 // Comments // oddities

Setting the scene: Biking home after work, approx 9pm. I bike past the usual place I buy phone credit and the signs are still outside. I need phone credit, thats strange I think, I thought they closed at 7pm.

Lock up bike.

Check times on door, should have closed at 7pm.

me: Guten Arben

german phone credit retailer man (gpcrm): Hallo, (come on people if i’m bothering to guten arben, have the decency to not offer me a Hallo, i’m supposed to be abroad)

me: I thought you closed at 7pm? (why I feel the need to start these little conversations here as well I dont know, I guess I’m just chattier than I realised)

gpcrm: No, we close at 8pm in November and December

me: (non-verbal, think quizzical eyebrow movement) ?

me: Its 9pm now though?

(pause)

gpcrm: yes.

(5 second pause, Im waiting for further clarification)

me: (giving up) Well I’ll have a 15eur eplus card then please.

gpcrm: sure.

I love german people. It reminds me of the old days (circa 2000) when you used to only be able to send one text message at a time. So the phone would display remaining characters and u wud find smrt wys 2 reduc wrds 2 save £. Sometimes when talking to some german people it reminds me of that. That conversation is displayed in the german brain as a series of text messages (or sms’ as they would call them), and the aim is to reduce all communication into just the bare, efficent minimum to save verbal costs or something, maybe chit chat costs 12p a go here and no-one has told me.

The Club style

// October 15th, 2006 // Comments // oddities

Biking through the park theres a little guy that busks on the bridge. Everyone I mentioned him to knows of him so I’ll assume he’s some kind of legendary busking figure in the zig. He always looks amazingly jolly, clearly really enjoying his job. His voice has a striking resemlance to vic reeves in shooting stars when he sings in the “club style”. On friday as I was biking past the song he was massacring seemed really familiar. Just as I was leaving ear shot, the penny dropped it was Shania Twains “Still the one”, only in a new genre that I’ve coined “post-neo (all good genres contain the word post and neo)-german-busker-club style-country)
