Just got my order of three type tees and I'm rather unhappy. The pictures of two of them online clearly displayed them as being off white in color (no other color choices to choose from) and the third was represented as a light gray color. Imagine my surprise when I opened my package and found three KHAKI colored tees. Not cool. First of all, there were no other color options to choose from (no biggie..I don't mind off-white or light grey--but seriously...khaki? WTF? Who wears khaki colored tees? The sizes (for the girly shirts) really do run small. I ordered a large (because most sizes do run small) but I can barely squeeze into the large. Even the XL I bought as a lounging around the house shirt was snug. I'm not fat at all...big breasted, but it was even small in the waist area. Due to the unpredictable sizing and the color of tees I received, I won't be ordering from them again. This kinda bums me out because I think their type tees are rather clever. To illustrate that I am not color blind (or my computer just doesn't see colors accurately..not the case I assure you) check out the colors on the following shirts:<br><br>1.) Actually, Medicine is the Best Medicine (should be off white--compare it to the background color).<br><br>2.) It's just safer to assume I know karate (should be off white).<br><br>3.) If you can read this...Make me a sandwich (should be light gray).<br><br>Khaki is the ONLY color that accurately describes what I ended up with. = (

Naturally,
If the genesis of a company's potential is found in the cleverness or originality of the design, then the person who created that design, i.e. the person who created that potential for Threadless to generate a profit, should be compensated accordingly. Yea, Tom Burns got screwed on the Communist Party.

You should check out Lucky Threadz. A lot of the artists from Threadless are working with those guys now and they are compensated a pre-negotiated percentage for every single one of their shirts that sells. I know b/c I signed on with them to print a few designs that never made it up on the Lucky Threadz site - no wonder why with the stuff they have up there, but it did allow me to see the artist agreement. I think it's a much better way to do it.

"2) I work for a competitor in Spreadshirt
I can see why people would think I’m biased, I’d think that too. All I can say is I wear a Threadless tshirt at least two days a week into work and see at least 5 others during the working day, we are pro Threadless, this is a big marketplace!"

The point with the Threadless shirts is absolutely true. Adam regulary lowers the spirit of the whole Spreadshirt company when he shows up with the best things not made by us.

Adam, I really like the idea to make you to the new "Competition Basher" of Spreadhirt. In the old days companies always claimed "We're better than....". But today we just explain that our competitors are worse. This makes quite less effort for us and you have a real innovative new profession beyond industry ambassadoring ;-)

Oddica offer more, but in reality probably pay less. Of course the exposure that comes from winning Threadless is probably worth a fortune. I think its not a matter of needing to offer more, for me it just seem a little bit inconsistent with the brand's ideals that they wouldn't re-compensate the artist on re-print, even if its just an additional $200 per re-print run. Its more of a principle thing than anything else.

i also agree about artist compensation. take Flowers In The Attic for example, a Threadless classic and one of the original Threadless designs. It's been reprinted over and over and always sells well. But how much did the artist make?

well the design was around when i first found Threadless in 2005, and the prize then was $400 and $100 store credit. not a lot.

I think it's interesting that the designer of 'The Communist Party', Tom Burns, designed another version of it for Lucky Threadz (which you can see <a href="http://www.luckythreadz.com/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=390&name=Communist-Party&osCsid=0f7e6a325a9de8b82202f05ccd652fbf" rel="nofollow">here</a>; I'd post the URL but it's really long).

You're totally right about compensation, think of how profitable 'The Communist Party' must have been for them, and yet the original artist always gets a set amount.

Maybe they should knock a couple of dollars each tee when it is on a reprint, since some money from the initial run is going towards the artist?

Also, on Jake Nickell's threadless page he recently(ish) blogged about the amount they offer designers, and wondered if they were paying too much, which is funny because I thought they were paying too little. I know they offer the largest monetary reward, but what the artist earns per t-shirt sold is surely one of the lowest in the industry.

You should probably link to your original post somewhere in this post :P

1. That the community is 'messy' (by which I felt like you meant 'off-topic and inane'), I feel might actually help some aspects of the community, although I personally do like on-topic discussion of designs and the new critique feature.
3. The single Threadless Select tee that I've purchased is nice. It's printed on American Apparel, so I knew what to expect. I really haven't had a problem with them being inconsistently sized, as I hear some people complain about. The print quality is also substantially better than their normal tees. The print is softer, smoother, and thinner. This print will certainly not crack.
4. The non-Select tees seem to be the same, though.
5. This is such a tricky thing... while you don't want to print so many that the limited-edition-ness of the shirts isn't a bonus, you don't want to print so few that people get so frustrated with not being able to buy a shirt that they just give up. I wouldn't be surprised if that was happening: I remember that some shirts would sell out before the newsletter announcing new shirts came out, so you'd have to check the website itself if you actually wanted to get something. They've fixed the timing on that, I think (unless it's just that they print way more of each design).
6. But Threadless don't care about their sales, they care about FUN (according to that movie)!

I'm going to be writing a final paper for a Sociology class (Technology and Society) about Threadless, so I'll let you know how that goes (and maybe put it up on Fantastic Blognanza). I might use some of the stuff from your dissertation. I also hope to have enough time to do a thorough enough examination of the forums to support my arguments...
